MENTAL DISORDERS
Stress vs. Mental Disorder
BIBLICAL TEACHING
WELCOME TO PASTOR DR. CARLOTTA'S COUNSELING CENTER.
What is mental illness? We could probably say that mental illness is a wide variety of symptoms that produce suffering and disability in one's personal, social, or work-related life. Though several hundred (100) disorders have been identified, and then classified according to symptoms and severity of the case, there is strong evidence that most mental disorders have their roots in the spirit world, brought about by demons.
The Bible says little about mental disorders, but does give an instance of mental disorder being faked, an actual incident of mental disorder, and a charge by a king of Paul being mentally unbalanced. Some Bible translations use different words to describe insanity, as insane, lunatic, seizures, and epileptics. Many Christian counselors believe that physical illness epilepsy, mental disorders, and demon possession refers to different situations, though at times the symptoms are similar.
Though all physical and expressive disorders came into the world because of Adam's original sin, there is no reason to think that all disorders are due to that individuals personal sin.
Problems that are associated with Mental disorder is stress. This can be broadly classify into three areas: Biological, psychological, and social. The biological area is impacted by drugs, toxins, brain damage, lack of correct nutrients or sleep. The psychological area is impacted by the emotions that run amuck, with fear, aggravation, and lack of confidence running high on the list.
The stress that is classified as social comes from worrying about finances, unemployment, political instability, tension and uncertainties. There are also some environmental situations that seem to impact this areas, such as prolonged periods of heat, darkness, crowding, noise, or other demanding situation.
There are some predisposed influences on mental disorders. Severe weather conditions that wreak havoc in an area affects one person differently than another it causes them to be depressed and powerless. There is also the family environment when growing up, such as dissonance in the family, a severe loss in childhood, trauma, neglect or abuse by parents, rejection, rigidity that brings on the idea of incessant failure in life.
Apparently, there is connection with being poor and mental disorders. These may be connected to stress mentioned above. A person's martial status, social class, place of residence, and religious affiliation seem to impact mental disorders. All men sin and there is a responsibility for that.
There are conscious, deliberate sins, and the innate sinfulness of man that may impact man with mental disorders. There are mental disorders that thew individual is responsible for both the problem and the treatment, which is basically repentance and change behavior. There are mental disorders where the sinful behavior was in someone else that impacted the one having the problem mentally. This could be where one person puts another down, and the second party develops an inferiority complex and/or low self-esteem.
There are mental disorders where deeply held fears, maturities, or insecurities have brought them about, which is because of the fallen world we live in, and not because of a deliberate sin. There are also mental disorders where stress, poverty, war, inequalities, disease, and injustice impact us. Most of the mental disorders rise from more than one of these areas.
When stress get too intense, some turn to suicide. It is rare for a suicide to be a urge of the moment situation. It is usually thought about and even planned for weeks and months. Through a person's thinking may be very illogical to us, to the person it tends to be normal. It is in most cases a method of escape for them.

I think this hub is the anti-anti-toxin to anxiety! Help, the verbosity of it is making me anxious!
Thank you for this Hub Dr. Carlotta, I see that the comment of verbosity was addressed on this Hub! I appreciate how you answered that comment that now has vanished! I know you are not trying to hurt anyone just educate them.
Your right Dr. Rob, God says his people perish because of the lack of knowledge.
This is a great hub. I can see what you are talking about. It is usually a lot of the things we come into contact with that stress us to the ultimate. But I do wonder if there is a chemical missing in the brain that does not let a person reason. If they could reason ..they would not take such drastic measures. Why can one reason the good road and someone else take the wrong road? Interesting.
Thank you for sharing ....my best to you!
Thank you for sharing this information. Mental illness is so understood. I see the mistreatment of people with a mental illness mistreated every day. People can't seem to get outside themselves long enough to understand the disease and not just see the behavior. Thumbs up!
Thank you so much for opening the world's eyes to the sin of stigmatizing those who are mentally ill. I've written the chapters of my childhood. Psychologists say I'm a walking miracle, as much of life I haven't shared here. I had a younger sister that suffered so much worse and denied her illness until it manifested at the age of 13. She managed her medications well and lived a fairly "normal" life, even married. She died at 39, and I praise God He removed all suffering, as I felt so much compassion for her to have to suffer the rest of her days with this. I love her with all my heart, and I pray people will love others, especially family members with mental illness, because they are stronger than even we are, and they just may not be around tomorrow to say, "I love you with all my heart." God bless you.
DrCarlotta,
Thankyou for posting this hub. It is important to me to hear the comments of some of your fans regarding mental illness. A personal story one day I may share. Something I have lived with since adolescence, with obsessive worry, constant thoughts of suicide, during the early years of a diagnosis developed psychosis, and suffered from severe, deepened depression. It was tough and I have lived through it through proper meds and treatment as well as my complete surrender to Christ. The love of my family, especially my daughter, mother, and sister, now my wife have supported in many, many ways. Please, if I may be of assistance to you I have the potential now to have risen above the illness and am desiring to help others if I may. Thankyou for your insight as well as such understanding fans. People like myself need you. God Bless You and all.
John
Thankyou very much drpastorcarlotta! I would like to see folks with a mental illness diagnosis to know it can get better. There is always hope through treatment and the right kind of treatment, be it through medication, spiritual counseling, (which so many people tried helping me with), and just good friends to help you through, there really is a light at the end of the tunnel. My main problem despite a psychosis and severe depression was a hardening of my heart. Looking back, I was very angry at God for having my life turn out so badly. It was in fact mostly my fault to turn my heart away from him......do you know when I was about to go over the edge with constant worry and excessive thoughts of suicide, I felt a strong hand on my left shoulder....I turned only to see the empty space of the long corridor of my office building. It scared me, the thoughts never left me, but it kept me from completely making the decision to go through with it. I shake sometimes thinking of it but I think now in retrospect, that God has always tried getting my attention. I think everyone who suffers a diagnosis of mental or emotional illness really should seek professional help because it provides you time to heal. There are so many factors and variables in my life but then again, I am not a doctor. I just am trying to reach out and be a friend. I do not know if I have helped but I truly hope someone who needs to hear can come to know in their hearts, suicide is NOT the way....ONLY through CHRIST, and medication in my case, has helped. Peace to you and your readers. I pray we can help each other. John
I enjoyed reading this page. You have a great deal of good information that will help many.
Thank you.

The bible is constantly updated and reviewed of opinion and fact with new incoming knowledge. Mental illness is a medical condition like a heart problem only it is of the mind. It is triggered by stress and needs professional help. In appropriate families, one is not triggered. I know of a church minister who is not entirely religious as he is very the system, and his son keeps getting repeated attacks.
Sister Carlotta, thank you so much for addressing this. As a mental health crisis worker, I come into contact with all types of mental diseases in various stages: suicidal ideation, psychosis, hallucinations, etc. You're right, some are biological (like the 19 yr old with schizophrenia who's also had a mom or dad and other ancestors with the disease) that's been passed down through family genetics. If you could only see the poor condition of some of the people I see. Thank God for understanding!
I bet your a wonderful counselor. You have such a lovely smile and beautiful optomism about you. Our Becky has a disorder that effects her nerves. It's like having too much nerve impulses going to them. Sometimes she is as stiff as a board, her entire body. She must take muscle relaxants to relax the muscles. She has Cerebral Palsy. She is beautiful but quite afflicted. She is very happy when she is happy. Right now her grandmother is in the living room visiting. God Bless you Dear Heart. Beautiful sharing hubs.
Thanks for nice information. Mental disorder is really unexpected for any human being. I think sometimes proper care can solve this problem for many mental patient.
